Description

Gideon Welles (1802-1878) Politician. Welles was the United States Secretary of the Navy from 1861 to 1869. His buildup of the Navy to successfully execute blockades of Southern ports was a key component of Northern victory of the Civil War. 7 ¾" x 2 ¾" check, written and signed, Riggs & Co., November 9, 1865, payable to "G. R. Hale." There is a revenue stamp on the face and cancellation holes, none of which touch the signature.
