French, early 20th century, exterior with brass-tacked wood and leather strips, brass latches and mounts, red-painted "R" in circle and "Pittsburgh Penn", base with wood strips marked "Louis Vuitton" with addresses, steel cylindrical wheels, interior lid with padded top, paper labels for Louis Vuitton and John Wanamaker, original leather security strap, 23 x 36 x 21-1/2 in., interior with stains, lacking tray, security strap with break 9-1/2 in. from tail, exterior with typical wear and later varnished surface, lacking one wheel Provenance: By family descent to consignor: Henry W. Oliver (1840-1904) founder of Oliver Iron Mining Co. married Edith Cassidy in 1862. Their daughter Edith Oliver (1865-1940) married Henry Robinson Rea in 1889. Oliver gave the newlyweds 250 acres inn Sewickley Heights to build their grand home and formal gardens, named Farmhill. Their only son Michael Moorhead Rea and Mrs. Joyner married in 1952. The trunk probably belonged to Edith and Henry Rea. Collection of Mrs. Peggy Rea Joyner, Sewickley, Pennsylvania. Proceeds to Benefit the Claude Joyner Education Fund for Young Doctors at Allegheny Hospital, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
