Item Details
Description
Thirty-foot diesel powered launch from J. Pierpont Morgan's private steam yacht "Corsair III". This historic craft was designed by Captain Nathanael G. Herreshoff (Captain Nat), icon of American yachting. This craft was used by J.P Morgan Jr. To ferry guests back and forth to the J-Beavor Webb designed Corsair of 1899. The launch hung on davits from the port side. This vessel was put into use in 1925 after it's completion by the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company in Bristol, Rhode Island. The plans are part of the Hart nautical collection at MIT. The craft was built from plan number 381. Hull length is 30', beam is 7' 6" and she draws only two feet of water. Power is by a Yanmar Diesel. All systems are in top operating condition. The extensive restoration on this jewel of yachting history was undertaken by Jim Titus of Mt. Hope Boatworks in Newport, Rhose Island. The details and story of Corsair and it's restoration were featured in a presentation at the classic yacht symposium in 2006 and 2008 at the Herreshoff Marine Museum. This vessel is in remarkable condition. This is a splendid opportunity to acquire a relic of the steam yacht era. Priceless for it's connection to the Morgan's and Corsair, it is perhaps equally rare for the fact that it was designed by "Captain Nat". Nathanael Green Herreshoff (1848 - 1938) was an American Naval architect-mechanical engineer. He revolutionized yacht design and produced a succession of undefeated America's Cup defenders 1893 - 1920. The yachts he designed were the largest, most expensive and most powerful ever created to defend yachting's supreme prize. Hence, Captain Nat is also known as "The Wizard of Bristol".
Condition
She is ready for immediate use this season. The only item needing eventual but not immediate attention is the small area of top deck at the vessel's bow.
