Description

The Prisoners of Australia. A Narrative. By Charlotte Anley. London: J. Hatchard, 1841. Twentieth century binding of half leather and marbled boards. A very good copy. The author came on a mission to Australia to inspect the conditions of female prisoners of New South Wales. The author is highly critical of the NSW Female Factory and of the practise then allowed of a former convict going there to chose a "slave" or wife. The book is as expected rather religious and highly critical of the system in place.
