His early dabbling in paint led to him opening his own French Quarter gallery with the help of his mother at the age of 15. When he was 17, he was stricken with polio, and due to his disability, the Louisiana Department of Education funded his education at the John McCrady School of Fine Arts in New Orleans. Rucker worked as a textile designer and medical artist at Tulane University School of Medicine and was honored with the Louisiana Legends Award in 1996. He is best known for his sentimental and finely detailed renditions of Louisiana landscapes and subjects.
