HALF SHEKEL OF TYRE

TEMPLE TAX

7. HALF SHEKEL OF TYRE From the Holy Land, 18 BC - 70 AD, this museum quality specimen numismatically graded Very Fine is believed by most scholars to have been minted in Jerusalem, as evidenced by the letters "KP" to the right of the eagle on the reverse. This type of coin and the silver shekel were the only currencies accepted at the Temple in Jerusalem. Significantly, the half-shekel is the amount of Temple tax per household. Similar to the shekel, the obverse design is the Laureate Head of Melgarth facing right and wearing a lion skin knotting around his neck and the reverse design is an eagle with an inscription, translated "Of Tyre the Holy and Inviolable". Many historians believe these are included in the reference to "30 pieces of silver" given to Judas Iscariot to betray Jesus. Est: $200-300
