26. JOHN KEBLE (1792-1866). British divine and poet whose sermon "National Apostasy" (1833) began the Oxford Movement, an effort to return to those sacraments and doctrines discarded by the Church of England. Nice collection of eleven ALsS "J Keble," 12mo and 16mo, 21pp, mostly from "Hursley Vicarage," Feb 1829 - Feb 1859. Spanning 30 years, Keble writes to various people regarding routine political, social and church affairs. A sampling: To John May in Bristol, he writes Feb 15, 1829, lamenting his full schedule, adding "I am afraid they will return Peel again, which in my opinion will be the worst step they ever took..." On Jul 3, 1844, Keble writes to the Privy Council office regarding their forthcoming inspection of the Church school "with the hope of prevailing on you to be our guest for as long time as may be convenient to you; an arrangement which will give us an opportunity of learning many things from you for the good of our school" and invites them on a particular Sunday "as our Sunday Schools are a very material part of our education here..." On Nov 18, 1848, he discusses the possibility of a funeral service for someone where "there was no expression of penitence at all" and discusses such courses that might be "adopted short of declining the service altogether...or you might omit the clauses in the Service that one can hardly pronounce in such an instance; of course at your own risk. I sh'd say that this latter course was I think taken the other day in Cornwall, & sharply censured by the Bishop of Exeter..." All boldly penned. One letter evidences mounting traces on blank verso; one has been trimmed with address portion of integral leaf tipped beneath signature; normal toning; else VG. Est: $800-1000
