FOR MERITORIOUS SERVICE TO THE CHURCH28. [PAPAL ORDER OF ST. GREGORY] Originally founded by Pope Gregory XVI in 1831. A lovely medal signifying the award, the class of Knight Commander with Star, in original red case with gilt papal seal. It is believed to be from the 1930s or earlier. The eight-point Maltese cross in gold with red enamel and gold balls on the end of each point has a gold medallion at center bearing the image of St. Gregory with and the words Pro Deo et Principe on the reverse. The cross is suspended from a green enamel wreath attached to a red ribbon with orange/gold bands. In excellent condition. The case evidences light corner wear with occasional small abrasions to cover. Awards of this Order are usually made on the recommendation of Diocesan Bishops or Nuncios for specific services. Unlike membership of the Military Orders, membership of the Order of Saint Gregory does not impose any special obligations, but is awarded to acknowledge an individual's particular meritorious service to the Church.
