29. [CATHOLIC HIERARCHY] Fascinating archive of eleven cardinals and priests. Among them are printed magazine SPs by RICHARD CARDINAL CUSHING (1895-1970), archbishop of Boston, with multiple signatures. Included are: photo as he delivers his last mass after resigning; with photo on verso wearing yarmulke as he addresses members of a Brookline Temple; leading a pilgrimage at Lourdes, France; standing with Pope Paul VI; and with Pope John XXIII; also with a thin, young John Kennedy and his mother in 1946 in presentation of funds for the establishment of the Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. Memorial Hospital for Children. On verso, the Cardinal is pictured feeding a toddler at Boston City Hospital and signs both above and beneath image. [8 signatures total] Plus an ALS to Cornelius Greenway on North American College, Vatican City letterhead, [1963], advising that he is unable to obtain autographs of Paul VI until the second Council session "and I shall not be here at that time. Sorry - very sorry..." Present also is a signed portrait of PETER TATSUO CARDINAL DOI, 4"x5½", the first native of Japan to named cardinal. Nicely matted. Also a printed SP of LAURENCE CARDINAL SHEHAN (1898-1984), archbishop of Baltimore, color, overall 7¼"x10¼" quarter-length portrait. Present also is outstanding orator Archbishop FULTON J. SHEEN (1895-1979). Two TLsS, 1p each, Mar 17 and Sep 3, 1943. Both on Catholic University of America letterhead. In the first he writes, "...The questions you ask me are of a nature which asks me to judge another conscience. This I am hardly able to do...and would suggest that you pray earnestly that the situation will change..." In the latter, he acknowledges an Easter greeting. Also, a superb ISP [Bachrach] by HUMBERTO CARDINAL MEDEIROS, Archbishop of Boston from 1970 through 1983, color, image 8½"x11", overall 10"x14½". Inscribed to Father Francis X. Murphy and signed on photographers mount, adding "June 26, 1980." Present also are two ALsS by FRANCIS AIDAN CARDINAL GASQUET, 5½pp. On Aug 26, 1892, he writes from "The Monastery," London, to Dom Ethelbert describing reactions to a sermon and complaining of life in the monastery where is working for a time. The second, from Rome, contains social content, and his comments that the English Collage and the Beda which are under his care are to be separated into two entities. Plus TLS by FRANCIS CARDINAL SPELLMAN (1889-1967), archbishop of NY, May 11, 1939. On Sacred Heart Rectory letterhead expressing appreciation for good wishes "on the occasion of my transfer to New York..." Together with an ALS, Aug 1, 1957, wherein he advises he is "offering Mass for Catherine and for your consolation for no father could do more for his children than you..." Present also is a nice TLS by FRANCIS CARDINAL GIBBONS (1834-1921) on Cardinal's Residence, Baltimore, letterhead, Dec 11, 1914. Containing a lengthy "sentiment to be embodied in a calendar. 'Let us remember there can be little or no charity without some self-sacrifice...'" Also an ALS on mourning stationery by NICHOLAS CARDINAL WISEMAN (1802-1865), the first archbishop of Westminster, 2½pp, declining an invitation and mentioning his love of archeological science and literature. With original transmittal envelope. Lastly, there is a postcard TLS by FATHER EDWARD J. FLANAGAN (1886-1948) thanking Howard Metzger for his interest in Boys Town. Accompanied by photograph of the priest with a child taken shortly before his death. Overall VG/Fine. Est: $300-400
