CROMWELL:31. EDWARD EVERETT HALE (1822-1909). American abolitionist clergyman and author of patriotic Man Without a Country (1863) believed to have encouraged supporters of the Union cause; chaplain of the US Senate from 1903. Manuscript LS "E E H," 4pp, 8vo, Roxbury, MA, Nov 11, 1908. On his personal letterhead to Rev. George L. Chaney regarding the history of New England in Cromwell's time. Excellent historical content. In small part, "In the State Papers (English) you will find much light about Winslow's appointment as commissioner for Jamaica & his quarrel with Admiral Venables. Winslow was acting then as the Commissioner of Massachusetts Bay in England. He died at sea 8th May 1655 & was buried at sea with the honours of war. So soon as Cromwell got Jamaica Leverett was appointed by Massachusetts as his stead in London. Cromwell at once addressed Leverett on removing the whole colony of Massachusetts to Jamaica...how differently the later history of the world would have read if this plan had been successful..." Hale pens over four lines in his holograph beneath and boldly signs. Fine example. Accompanied by original transmittal envelope. Est: $100-150 |
