33. JAMES PEMBERTON (1723-1808). Influential Quaker merchant and philanthropist; brother of Israel; one of the founders of Pennsylvania Hospital; succeeded Benjamin Franklin as president of Pennsylvania Abolition Society. Partly printed DS, 1p, 6¼"x3¼", Philadelphia, Apr 26, 1768. Pennsylvania Hospital subscription certificate boldly signed acknowledging debt of 20 pounds by merchant Thomas Riche. Light toning; 2½"x½" fragment of paper lacking at right bottom margin, probably containing a signature. Pemberton was exiled to Virginia after the British dispossessed him of his home in 1777. It later passed to the government where it became the site of the US Naval Asylum. Est: $400-600
