34. PHILLIPS BROOKS (1835-1893). American Episcopal bishop renowned for his sermons but is best known as the author of the hymn "O Little Town of Bethlehem" in 1868. ALS, 1p, small 8vo, Boston, Apr 7, 1887. On his imprinted address stationery to Charles Marseilles explaining that he could not provide the information requested of him. Boldly penned and signed. Fine example. Accompanied by vintage magazine photograph as he walks across Boston Common in 1892, 7½" circular portrait with his successor as bishop of MA, Rev. William Lawrence. Very nice.
