597. SAMUEL P. LANGLEY (1834-1906). American astronomer and aeronautical pioneer who built the first successful heavier-than-air flying machines. He directed the Smithsonian Institution from 1887 to 1906. Brief TLS "S.P. Langley", 1p, 12mo, Washington, Dec 31, 1890. On Smithsonian Institution letterhead to Mr. Hough. In full, "I am uncertain whether I have thanked you for your really very interesting paper on the fire making apparatus in the U.S. National Museum..." Boldly signed in brown ink. Original fold transverses signature; light ink brushing of signature; o/w VG. Est: $200-300
