Description
735. [ARTISTS COLLECTION] A nice collection of American artists. Included is a page from a guests book displaying the signatures of 12 guests at dinner party, Feb 26, 1909. Among them are landscape painter JAMES RENWICK BREVOORT (1832-1918) of the Hudson River School; sculptor AUGUSTUS LUKEMAN, whose works include Presidents McKinley and Pierce, Kit Carson and Columbus. Plus actress, author and playwright ETHEL WATTS [Mumford] GRANT; NY railroad president G. HILTON SCRIBNER, together with three spouses. Included also is an ALS "J R Brevoort," 4pp, 8vo, n.p., n.d. Delightfully humorous content in which the painter describes seeing his neighbor and a Methodist minister walking up Broadway in broad daylight in their shirt sleeves. "Should not a committee of the Church be appointed to look into the matter? Verily it passeth my understanding..." Plus a clipped signature of sculptor RANDOLPH ROGERS (1825-1892), mounted; and a bank check, Kingsville, MD, payable to sculptor LOUIS ROSENTHAL, whose tiny miniatures induced King George of England to change the charter of the Royal Society of Miniature Painters and Sculptors to allow this one American. Rosenthal has endorsed the check on verso. All boldly penned and signed. Letter and check each evidence single vertical fold away from signatures; else VG. Present also is a printed drawing by cartoonist CHIC YOUNG of the comic strip Bumstead family, 5"x3¼", inscribed and signed by Young, adding "2-10-71." Est: $100-150
