Description
PENNSYLVANIA CANDLE BOX. Carved curly maple with inlay and a dark stain. Signed "J.N. Matthesiee" (John Nicholas Matthesiee, 1805-1880), a gunsmith in Bedford County, Pennsylvania. The raised shell and checkered carving on the lid reflects the carving found on long rifles. There are also inlaid ivory baskets of flowers with copper tacks and a brass fitted end similar to a patch box. Three ivory ball feet. 12"l. 3 1/4"w. 2 1/4"h.
