4.5"x8.5" from Darwin, California (Death Valley) very fine to mint condition. Depicts both the butterfly and the lizard twice with four more images rounding the top rim. Starfish shape woven into lid which shows some fading. An Amazing basket from a legend craftswoman. With 'Eva Slater's book 'PANAMINT SHOSHONE BASKETRY An American Art Form' which dedicates a chapter to Gregory. excerpt from the book: 'To one who knows the hardships which have been endured by these mature basket weavers, there is a degree of pathos in the persistency and delicacy with which they etch the butterfly, most etheral of all the denizen of the desert, on their baskets, as if seeking to hold permanently the beauty which so lightly flits by their very practical lives.'
