NOTE: Pennsylvania Avenue's revitalization was first suggested by President John F. Kennedy who reportedly called the Avenue a disgrace while viewing it during his inaugural parade. Senator Moynihan's involvement began in 1962, when as Assistant Secretary of Labor, he recommended the federal government be instrumental in its renewal. In 1973 the Pennsylvania Avenue Development Corporation was formed; the Avenue's final renewal project ended with the completion of the Ronald Reagan International Trade Building in 1998.
