Description
Roy DeForest (American, 1930 - 2007). "Watching the Serpent". Lithograph. Early 1950s. Signed and editioned in pencil, lower right. Trial proof. Cream laid paper. Good impression. Printed to the edge of the sheet. Provenance: Estate of the Minimalist painter/printmaker Sam Tchakalian (1929-2004). DeForest's early prints were issued in very small editions, many not editioned at all, and are very rare. His work sells regularly at Christie's, Bonham's, etc. DeForest's oeuvre evolved through a number of styles, from abstraction to non-objective, from funk to realism. His early paintings were composed of larger, overlapping, amorphous shapes in bright colors. The early prints were not as colorful and were characterized by "Motherwellian" blacks.
