Artist: EDWARD HENRY POTTHAST (1857-1927) Size: 29 3/8 x 39 3/8 in./74.6 x 100 cm Imp. Courmont Fréres, Paris "The trio of a woman rider, horse, and clown became an iconic image for the circus. Potthast abstracts the basic elements for this Barnum & Bailey poster, introducing a dynamic energy not preset in [other versions of the design]. ... The dash, verve, and brilliant background color suggest that during [the artist's] second trip abroad [he] studied the design, color, and liberal sexuality of Jules Cheret's posters" (Strobridge, p. 104). In this particular instance, the image is noted as being 'authorized' by Strobridge Litho and printed in France, used frequently for the circus's European tour from 1897 to 1902.
B+/ Unobtrusive folds.
