Artist: ANONYMOUS Size: 28 1/2 x 38 1/4 in./72.5 x 97 cm Strobridge Litho, Cincinnati "Born in 1900, Charles was found by Dr. Charles Buchanan on a scientific expedition to Africa. Buchanan was amazed by the chimp's ability to imitate and brought him to London. Later, when he discovered that Charles had learned to ride his bicycle, Buchanan decided to exhibit the animal. ... The London agent for the Barnum & Bailey circus convinced [him] to bring Charles I to America [where he was then] billed as 'the marvelous chimpanzee that has astounded all Europe with his manlike understanding and wonderful accomplishments.' ... The design of the poster is unusual, as rather than illustrating Charle's performing prowess it depicts a day in the life of the famous chimpanzee outside the ring" (Strobridge, p. 206).
