COMMITTEE UNIQUE "SLEEP" FLOOR LAMP FROM THE KEBAB SERIES, 2005 ceramic, glass, metal, rubber, fiberglass, Pierro doll, signed on the underside of the house "Committee 2005 "Sleep" 70⅞ in. (180 cm) high Literature ICON, no. 22, April 2005, p. 69 for a similar example The young English design team Committee is interested in the way aesthetics and visual culture impact people's lives. They produce a wide variety of work from fashion and textiles to furniture and interiors. The "Kebab Lamp" series, launched at the 2004 Milan Furniture Fair, is made by skewering a collection of found objects, antiques and other miscellany no longer in use, aiming to delight the viewer with an explosion of color and reference. Built as a totem, the lamps contain stories and meanings related to the eclectic objects they include and so each lamp produced is unique. The concept behind the lamps was born of Committee's interest in the way people relate to and value objects. The lamps play with this sense of value as fine porcelain and plastic come together to form a sculptural composition with its own integrity. The lamps are intended to be explorations of 'taste' while simultaneously referring to the consumption of material goods and the inevitable waste this produces. THE LAMPS ARE INTENDED TO BE EXPLORATIONS OF 'TASTE' WHILE SIMULTANEOUSLY REFERRING TO THE CONSUMPTION OF MATERIAL GOODS AND THE INEVITABLE WASTE THIS PRODUCES.
