ALEXANDER H. STEPHENS, Vice President of the Confederate States of America.
Autograph Letter Signed, “Alexander H. Stephens,” in brown ink, on fine laid paper, June 22, 1866, Milledgeville, GA, 3-page letter on integral mailing sheet, 7.75” x 5”, Very Fine. This letter is to Henry Cleveland in Crawfordville. Stephens elucidates in some detail his observations on the legality of a proposed lottery within Georgia with regard to the distribution on a certain tract of land. He finds nothing illegal, comparing it with the way that “ ladies and other benevolent fairs are conducted. I speak not upon holding of such things but of the law touching them...” Included on the back leaf is a 3-cent U.S. Postage stamp, on top of another signature by Stephens: “...Opinion / ... Stephens” (part of the writing is covered by the stamp). A very fine piece with a few small spots scattered throughout the letter.
