Two J. S. Johnston (c.1839- December 17, 1899)photos of "Defencer", 1895. First image is a J.S. Johnston albumen photo of the yacht "Defender" taken on August 2, 1895 in the Goelet Cup race. She is seen under full sail with full crew "Rounding the Mark" which is the lightship seen on the left. Other spectator fleet vessels are also in view. Identified as plate number 139, Defender, copyright 1895, J.S. Johnston, NY. Second image is also of "Defender", shown from astern with a large group of men in formal yachting attire and crew, identified as plate number 138, copyright 1895. Image sizes 6 1/2" x 8 3/4" & 8 3/4" x 6 1/8".
