Description
Two (2) Confederate States of American notes, three (3) obsolete bank notes, 5 items total. 1st item: February 17, 1864 Confederate States of America (CSA) $500 Bill from Richmond, Virginia, depicting the portrait of Lieutenant General Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson, right, with a vignette of George Washington on horseback against the Confederate flag, left. Seventh Series. Serial # 32993/ pp B. CS-64. "For Register" and "for Treasurer" signatures. 2nd item: February 17, 1864 Confederate States of America (CSA) $10 Bill from Richmond, Virginia, depicting the portrait of Robert M. T. Hunter, Confederate States Secretary of State and Confederate Senator, right, with a vignette of soldiers and horses pulling a cannon, center. Seventh Series. Serial # 55907/ pp F. CS-68. "For Register" and "for Treasurer" signatures. 3rd item: $10 obsolete bank note dated August 9, 1840 from the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal Company, Washington, D.C, with a vignette of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Serial # 87/ pp A. Clerk/President signatures. 4th item: $1 obsolete remainder bank note dated 186[blank] from the Exchange Bank of Attica, Indiana, depicting vignettes of farm life, left, right, and center. Serial # [blank]/ pp A. Auditor of State signature. 5th item: $1 obsolete bank note dated February 1867 from the Macon & Brunswick Railroad Company, Macon, Georgia. Serial # 58722/ pp A. Treasurer/President signatures. Provenance: the collection of the late James A. Newman (Nashville, TN, 1892-1964). Newman earned a law degree from Cumberland University and served in World War One, where he achieved the rank of Captain. After the war, he returned to Nashville where he began a distinguished legal career and won election to the state Senate in 1938. His currency collection has remained intact and in his family's possession from the time of his death in 1964.
