Item Details
Description
Federal Massachusetts banjo clock, comprised of a mahogany case with molded giltwood highlights to the front, fitted with weight driven brass movement. Red and gilt decorated eglomise throat and base tablet, the throat with classical urn and flower decoration, the lower panel depicting the Massachusetts State House designed by noted architect Charles Bulfinch. Brass bezel and sidearms, and gilt wood acorn style finial. Appears to retain the original brass works. Interior label reading "Daniel T. Smith/Formerly Jessie Smith/Watches, Clocks, Spectacles, Eyeglasses, etc./Watch Repairing a Specialty/241 Essex St. Salem, Mass". 33" H x 10 1/4" W. Circa 1810. Provenance: Estate of Lynn Scholl Renau, Louisville, Kentucky. Note: Jesse Smith Jr. apprenticed for Benjamin Balch in 1807 and later became his partner. They worked together until 1832. He then entered business under his own name as a watchmaker. In 1837 he advertised "Watches, Chronometers and Patent Timepieces. " His two sons, Edward and Daniel were in business with him by 1846 on Essex Street. (Source: Paul Foley, Willard's Patent Timepieces, Roxbury Village Publishing, p. 311). However, it is likely the label was applied several years after the clock was made, probably during a later cleaning or repair. (Additional high-resolution photos are available at www.caseantiques.com.)
Condition
Overall very good condition with general wear to the case. Craquelure to the painted dial with very slight losses around the perimeter. Some losses to finial. Works not tested or guaranteed.
