Description
Civil War-era tooled leather and brass bound album of forty-nine (49) photographic images, including forty-seven (47) cartes-de-viste, fifteen (15) depicting various Union Army and Naval officers and soldiers. Cartes-de-viste subjects include Henry Clay, Martha and George Washington, two depicting Union Army Brigadier General Robert Anderson (1805-1871), one taken when he was a Major, labeled "Taken at Fort Sumter, Feb'y 8, 1861", published by E. Anthony, New York, 1861, one labeled "Brady N.Y.", Union Army Brevet Lieutenant General Winfield Scott (1786-1866), Rear Admiral Andrew Hull Foote (1806-1863), and one possibly depicting the 31st Governor of Maryland Thomas Holliday Hicks (1798-1865). Also includes one loose CDV depicting a Civil War era Union Army officer, labeled Negative No 44519, photographed by Shorey, Baltimore, MD, three CDVs depicting illustrations of domestic life, and two tintypes depicting children, the remaining CDVs depicting men, women, and children in mid 19th century dress. 6 7/8" H x 5 1/4" W x 2 7/8" D. Provenance: Baltimore estates of Virginia Howard Miller (c. 1880-1946) and Hugh Purviance King (1873-1966) passed down to present Living Estate of Virginia Johnston, Chattanooga, TN. Condition
Album in overall good condition with areas of rubbing and losses to be expected from age. Spine in fragmentary condition with the majority of album pages separated from spine. Brass clasps functional. Photographic images in overall good condition. Front and back leaves with blue and gilt gold decoration with blank flyleaves separated from album. Album pages with areas of toning, foxing spots, wrinkling, to be expected from age.
