Item Details
Description
World War I Photo Album containing photographs related to the War in the Indian Ocean, including the wreckage of the German SMS Emden. The Emden was responsible for sinking nearly two dozen British ships and launching the surprise attack that led to the battle of Penang. She was destroyed in the Battle of the Cocos Islands by the Austrailian HMAS Sydney in November of 1914, killing 133 out of a crew of 376. The event is known as Austrailia's first Naval fight. There are also photographs of the USS Helena (likely PG9, an active member of both the South China Patrol and the Yangtze River Patrol from 1906-1929) and numerous sailors believed to be Helena crew members -one identified as W.G. Hartman (possibly the owner of the book) and one as George Kessler, the USS Elcano, "Japanese Torpet boats," the USS Pampanga, and a Japanese steamer "that ran aground __ side of Hong Kong." The album also includes 14 photographs of early 20th century Chinese subjects including The Country Club at Han Kou, the Bound at Shanghai, the Bound at Han Kou, the Carnival at Canton, and an image of a young girl standing beside a jardiniere and carved stand. Cloth cover with gilt lettering. Album - 7 1/8" x 5 1/2". Most photos - 5 1/4" x 3 1/4". Provenance: Descended in the Moran family of Woodland Farm in Williamson County, TN. (Additional high-resolution photos are available at www.caseantiques.com.)
Condition
Some photos are labeled on fronts in blue ink. One photo of the Emden is detached and has a corner fold with 1/4" loss. All other photos appear pasted down with toning and occasional scattered small stains. Cover with edge wear, fading and light grime.
