Description
German Philipp Reeb relief engraved double shotgun, 16 gauge, WWI era. Serial number and initials for Johann Jakob Reeb (1843-1924) "J. J. R. 2785", with German proof marks, underside of barrels and top of receiver. Barrels marked "Philipp Reeb, Hofbuhchsenmacher, Bonn" in gold lettering. Gold wire inlay and decorative foliate engravings around receiver and action, with panels depicting hunting dogs and quail on sides, stalking scene on bottom of receiver. Checkered fore stock, semi pistol grip, and triggers, highly figured marbled European walnut butt stock, round Krupp steel barrels, horn inlay on butt plate, small of stock, and edge of fore stock, horn trigger guard, bead on front sight, and extractors. Barrel length - 29 1/2". Overall length - 46". Provenance: Brought back from World War I as a "souvenir" by American soldier Charles S. Condition
Overall good condition. Fine pitting on barrels. Interior of barrels dirty but ring true. Action and safety mechanically sound. Areas of insect damage, largest 2", horn butt plate and trigger guard. Tined screw heads. Low pressure load. Checkering worn from use. Areas of sticky residue, underside of barrels and top of receiver near serial numbers and proof marks.
