Forty-nine (49) Black Americana trade cards and postcards. 1st-16th items: Sixteen (16) trade cards depicting African American subjects printed for businesses and products including three Arbuckle Brothers Coffee, one Bush's Liquid Beef, one St. Louis Beef Canning Company, one T. H. Chambers and Company, one Western Cottage Organ Company, one Kent's Loxa Pills, one Allen Brothers, one Brand and Company Manufacturers, one Nicoll the Tailor, one Williams and Clark Company's High Grade Bone Fertilizer, one George C. Napheys and Sons, one Clarence Brooks and Company Varnishes, and one Ariosa Coffee. One without business or product identification reading "United We Stand Divided We Fall". One of the Arbuckle cards titled "Mississippi" depicts an illustration of the "Battle of Vicksburg, 1863", set before a vignette of African Americans picking cotton in a field, part of a "Series of Fifty (50) Cards Giving a Pictorial History of the United States and Territories", lithographed by Donaldson Brothers, New York, 1892. Trade cards range in size from 4" H x 2 3/4" W to 3 1/2" H x 5 1/8" W. Late 19th century. 17th-49th items: Thirty-three (33) postcards depicting African American subjects in a variety of poses and situations, including two "Old Black Joe" cards, one World War II era card titled "Final Fitting, Army Reception Center, New Cumberland, PA", one group photographic card titled "Tuskegee Students at Obriens'", and two (2) Valentine's Day themed cards, the remaining cards with a "Dixieland" or "Southern" theme. Multiple publishers including Asheville Post Card Company, E. C. Kropp Company, Adolph Selige Publishing Company, C. O. Tucker, W. R. Thompson and Company, and others. Nine cards with personal pen inscriptions. Postcards approximately 3 5/8" H x 5 5/8" W. Late 19th/mid 20th century. Provenance: Private Knoxville, TN collection.
