Southeast Asia, Thailand, Sukhothai or early Ayutthaya period, ca. 1000 to 1400 CE. Beautiful and very old, this is a fine example of a gilded, hollow cast bronze depiction of the Buddha seated atop a multi-tiered throne that is designed to look like a piece of furniture, complete with tiny feet. The upper portion of the throne is in the form of an upturned lotus flower with the tips of the leaves in slight relief. The Buddha is depicted with a long face and serene features, with large, closed eyes and a prominent nose and mouth. He has a large ushnisha with a flame-like top, signaling his enlightened status. His ears are long, emphasizing his wealth when he was Prince Siddhartha - they have been stretched from wearing large earrings. Size: 3.4" W x 8.25" H (8.6 cm x 21 cm)

Buddhas are always depicted in different mudras, or poses, that represent historical moments in the Buddha's life, forms of meditation, or a symbolic combination of both. This Buddha is depicted in the Bhumisparsha mudra, with his right hand over the right knee reaching towards the ground and the palm inward and touching the lotus throne. His left hand lies in his lap with the palm upright. This mudra represents the moment of his awakening, as he defeated the demon Mara, and claimed the earth as his witness to his enlightenment.

This piece has been tested using thermoluminescence (TL) and has been found to be ancient and of the period stated. A full report will accompany purchase.

Fantastic deep green patina with some remaining gilding as shown. Nice deposits on surface, notably around the base and feet. The back foot is partially lost.
