Native American, Great Lakes region, possibly Ojibwa, ca. early 20th century CE. A beautiful beaded strap fragment from a loomed bandolier bag, made of multicolored glass seed beads, with a white background and yellow, pink, green, black, russet, and pale and dark blue beads creating in intricate, repeating pattern known as a "otter tracks" or "otter trails". The otter, an animal native to the Great Lakes region, is known to run on land with a rippling motion, so that its footprints form a diamond pattern, and that imprint is copied on Ojibwa garments, drums, utensils, and other items. Size: 23" W x 4.5" H (58.4 cm x 11.4 cm); size of display case: 30" W x 11" H (76.2 cm x 27.9 cm)
