Walter Farndon (New York, 1876-1964) oil on board impressionistic painting titled "Stone Cutters" depicting two men carving a block, rendered in a heavy impasto technique. Signed, lower right. Salmagundi Club exhibition label and Vose Galleries, Boston, MA label, en verso. Housed in a gilt wood frame. Sight - 9 1/2" H x 7 5/8" W. Framed - 15 3/8" H x 13 1/4" W. American, early 20th century. Provenance: the collection of Mr. and Mrs. H.R. Slaymaker, Nashville, Tennessee. Biography: English born painter Walter Farndon came to the United States as a child and is known as a New England artist. He attended the National Academy of Design, where he was later elected an Associate in 1928, and an Academician in 1937. He also studied with Robert Henri, and was a member of the Society of Independent Artists. He was best known for his impasto, Impressionist, sometimes near-Expressionist harbor and shore scenes. Very good condition, slight craquelure to lower right in thick impasto. Areas of loss to painted area, en verso.
