Three (3) Civil War era Newspapers, including Soldier's News-Letter and Columbia Phoenix. 1st item: Civil War era Union Soldier's News-Letter, Saturday, May 10, 1862, Vol. I, No. I, Ship Island, Harrison Co., MS. Includes articles about the capture of New Orleans, Fort Jackson and Fort Phillip, information about the movement of the federal fleet and troops, and deaths in the 30th Massachusetts Regiment and 8th Regiment Vermont Volunteers. Also included is an article predicting that the war would soon be over. 9 1/4" H x 6" W. 2nd-3rd items: Two (2) Civil War era Confederate States of America (CSA) Newspapers, The Columbia Phoenix, Thursday March 23, 1865, Vol. I, No. II and No. III, by Julian A. Selby, Columbia, SC. Includes articles about the capture, sacking, and destruction of the city of Columbia, South Carolina, copies of General Joseph E. Johnston's Report, a message from CSA President Jefferson Davis, descriptions of the Sherman's troops looting the city, a list of fire damaged buildings, news from the war's other fronts, a transcript of correspondence between Confederate general Wade Hampton and Union General W. T. Sherman, and a list of people who were believed to have followed the Federal army. 8 1/2" H x 22 1/2" W. Note: The Columbia Phoenix (1865-78) arose out of the charred remains of Columbia, the capital city of South Carolina, in the aftermath of the Civil War to record its losses and bear witness to its gradual recovery.
