Description
Cased pair of Memphis made Schneider & Company Percussion Derringers, .45 caliber, serial number 47, both matching on breech. Top of barrels marked "Schneider & Co Memphis, Tenn", tangs marked "1" and "2". Checkered walnut stocks in class style with clam shell fore tips, octagon barrels with engraved bands across breeches, plain German silver mounts and trigger guards, metal lock plates and checkered hammers, standard sights. Housed in a contemporary walnut case with inlaid brass bands and escutcheon with brown felt lining containing nipple wrench, ramrod, and bullet mold. Barrel length - 3 3/4". Overall length - 7". Case - 3" H x 12" W x 8 3/4" D. Provenance: Previously sold by James D. Julia in 2014. Estate of Jim Maconkey, Landrum, SC. Note: William S. Schneider was a gunsmith and gun maker working in Memphis, TN during the period leading up to the American Civil War. According to Frank Sellers' "American Gunsmiths", Schneider worked under his own name at Schneider & Co., in Memphis TN from 1859-1873. Actions are excellent. Metal with gunmetal color. Stocks with small handling marks. Contemporary case for display, not original to the derringers.
