Description
1827 Charleston Lafar Servant Slave Hire copper alloy badge, Number 1840. Diamond shaped with clipped corners and a hole at the top for suspension. Front marked "CHARLESTON" in a prepared lunate punch at the top, "No." in a prepared, square punch with "1840" in individual number punches, "SERVANT" in a prepared rectangular punch, and "1827" in a rectangular punch at the bottom. Hallmarked "LAFAR" in a prepared rectangular punch on the back. Includes signed document from W. L. Hunt stating the authenticity of the tag, October 16, 2006. 67.9 mm x 70.6 mm (2.67" x 2.78"). Provenance: Tag dug by William L. Hunt at Hamlin Plantation, Mt. Pleasant, SC, December 11, 1992. Estate of Jim Maconkey, Landrum, SC. Note: John Joseph LaFar was a Charleston silversmith and city marshal who received a contract to make slave badges after Charles Prince. Condition
Appearance is Fine to Very Fine in places. Dark brown in color, slightly dished, believed to add additional strength to the badge when worn.
