Description
Two (2) Robert E. Lee portrait items. 1st item: Civil War era charcoal and gouache portrait of General Robert E. Lee, paper laid on board. Handwritten note attached to back states "Portrait of General Robert E. Lee done in crayon by Hevila Ruter Dufour Cockerville wife of Dr. Samuel Johnstone Cockerville, work done in 1860's". Image possibly adapted from 1864 photograph of General Lee by Julian Vannerso. Unframed - 21 3/4" H x 17 3/4" W. Oval matte - 16 3/4" H x 14 3/4" W. Framed - 27" H x 23 3/4" W. Note: this drawing is recorded in the archives of the Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery Catalog of American Portraits, VA990924. (The Catalog of American Portraits (CAP), part of the National Portrait Gallery’s Office of Collections Information and Research, is a national portrait archive maintaining information and images for more than 200,000 portraits of prominent American subjects or by prominent American artists). Hevila Cockerville was born in Vevay, Indiana, 1843 and died 1911. She and her husband are buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, Washington, D.C. 2nd item: Hand-colored lithograph titled "The Lees of Virginia, Generals C.S.A. 1861-1865" after etchings by Charles B. Hall, published circa 1898. Features five small etched portraits of the Lee men in Confederate uniforms including Major General Fitzhugh Lee, Brigadier General Edwin Gray Lee, Major General William Henry Fitzhugh Lee and Major General George Wasington Curtis Lee, surrounding the central portrait of Robert E. Lee with the family coat of arms and an image of Stratford, the Lee family home. Facsimiles of each man's signature below portraits. French matted and framed under glass in painted wooden and gilt frame. Sight - 14 1/4" x 11". Framed - 21 3/4" x 17 1/2". (Additional high-resolution photos are available at www.caseantiques.com.)
Condition
1st item: Image in very good condition with few white mold spots in left lower quadrant, noted when out of frame. 1/2" L paper loss lower left corner, noted when out of frame. Acid burn areas on back of board, noted when out of frame. Frame with some losses to gilt inner molding. 2nd item: Overall good condition. General toning to paper.
