Description
Wilfrid Constant Beauquesne (French, 1847-1913) oil on canvas military painting depicting soldiers fighting in the streets of a European village. Several of the battle participants are on horseback, others lie mortally wounded in the street. Faint grid lines are visible, suggesting this painting may have been a study for a larger work. Signed "W. Beauquesne" lower right. Old paper label verso reads "54.5 x 45 Militari Russo Brunocaro". Housed in a molded gilt and stained wood frame. Sight - 17 1/4" H x 21" W. Framed - 23" H x 26 1/2" W. Late 19th century. Provenance: Private Southern collection of Military Art. Biography: Known for his scenic depictions of this war, Wilfried Beauquesne was known for his depictions of war. He attended the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris, where he studied under well known military artists Vernet-Lecomte and Horace Vernet.
