Description
Russian Greek Orthodox Icon, tempera on wood panel, depicting the Madonna and Child with male Saint, Cyrillic inscriptions above their heads. Label en verso identifies figures as Madonna of Skopiotissa with holy infant Jesus and St. Spiridon and states it dates from the late 18th to early 19th century and was purchased from Liros Gallery, Blue Hill, Maine. Black ink inscription below identifies the male saint as St. Tryphon or Triphon. 11 1/8" H x 15 3/4" W x 1/2" D. Provenance: The Estates of Olen Bryant and the late Vanderbilt University art professor Thomas Brumbaugh, Clarksville, Tennessee. Condition
Overall craquelure and scattered shrinkage. Some insect damage visible to sides of panel. Hole top center 1/4"W and surface losses center, largest 1/4" x 1 1/2" area. Blacklight shows scattered inpainting to Mary's face and hands, Saint's hat, and in background.
