Description
Gaspare Ruffolo (American/Illinois, 1908-1997) double sided painting on board, oil landscape on one side and abstract pastel on the other. Recto: Oil on board monochromatic scene of rural cotton mill including several buildings in shades of taupe, grey, silver and gold with donkeys hitched to a large cart of white cotton, and a worker in a plum color shirt and straw hat standing behind it. Hints of blue sky above. Signed lower right. On reverse: Abstract pastel sketch depicting the interior of a barn with rafters, partially complete, signed lower left Ruffolo. Unframed. 26" H x 32" W. American, early/mid 20th century. Biography: Chicago-born Gaspere Ruffolo (alternate spelling Gasper) studied painting at the Art Institute of Chicago with Wellington Reynolds and George Oberteuffer, and exhibited at the Art Institute. He was known for his landscapes and portraits, and was a member of the Association of Chicago Painters and Sculptors, Chicago Galleries Association, and the All-Illinois Society of Fine Artists.
