Description
Two (2) large Japanese Meiji Period (1868-1912) Satsuma porcelain items. 1st item: Large lidded jar in the form of an archaic censor, the lid with a foo dog or dragon figural finial, the body having fan shaped panels with landscape decoration, upturned handles with taotie masks, all raised on paw feet with taotie mask knees. Old faded character signature to the interior edge of the lid. 22" H x 14 3/4" W. 2nd item: Large lidded urn or vase, the lid with a figural scholar finial, the body with enameled warrior decoration, and the sides with fixed bail handles and knotted ropes. Signed on the underside of the lid and the base. 18 1/2" H. Late 19th/early 20th century. Provenance: Estate of Martha Lyman, Dayton, TN. 1st item: Both handles broken and repaired, overall light craquelure to glaze, general glaze wear. 2nd item: Overall light craquelure to glaze, general wear and losses to enameled decoration. Possible old repair to scholar finial head.
