Description
Kentucky House Sampler and Needlework Picture, 2 items total. 1st item: Kentucky Schoolgirl Needlework Sampler with alphabet and house or church, signed Mary Ann Allen, circa 1849. Silk on linen; naive composition with 2 upper and lower case alphabets and row of numbers, over a house or church building with peaked roof stitched in the lower right hand corner. Signed "Mary Ann Allen Her Work Worked in the 13th... ". File of genealogical research included. Housed in a figured wooden ogee molded frame. Sight - 10 3/4" H x 10 1/4" W. Framed - 19 3/4" H x 19 1/4" W. Note: Mary Ann Allen was born Dec. 13, 1836 in Cloyd's Landing, Cumberland County, Kentucky, the daughter of Sampson Allen (1807-1876) and Margaret Clemons (1808-1874). She married Barton Ellington Philpott, and gave birth to eleven children. She died in 1899. 2nd item: Signed and framed Kentucky needlework, silk and wool on linen; embroidered picture of a bouquet of flowers tied with a string. Signed "Frances Todd" at lower edge. File of genealogical research included. Housed in a stained wood frame. Sight - 10" H x 9 1/2" W. Framed - 13 1/8" H x 12 5/8" W. Note: Frances Todd was born in 1830 and was listed in the 1850 census living in the household of Robert and Emeline Flora of Kenton County. She married Elijah T. Hudson in Madison County on Oct. 25, 1853. She died in 1854, presumably giving birth to their first and only child, John B. Hudson. She is buried in the Hudson Cemetery in Jackson County. Condition
1st item: Sampler not examined out of frame; the significant discoloration suggest it may be glued down. 1" area of ground loss, right center; 1/4" area of ground loss lower center edge; top row of alphabet stitches missing, other scattered thread losses, significant fading. Antique frame has fading, shrinkage and 1" area of veneer loss lower left. 2nd item: Several significant losses to ground and to thread; staining affecting the upper half of the ground, scattered dark stains to lower edge.
