Item Details
Description
Two (2) President Andrew Jackson items, including a Printed Silk Broadside of his 2nd Inauguration Speech, and a lithograph portrait. 1st item: Broadside printed on silk with United States President Andrew Jackson's (1767-1845) second inaugural speech, delivered March 4, 1833. The speech, delivered to a large assembly inside the Hall of the House of Representatives and administered by Chief Justice John Marshall for the ninth, and last time, argues that the rights of the states as well as the integrity of the Union must be preserved to avoid the impending Civil War. He states "In the domestic policy of this Government there are two objects which especially deserve the attention of the people and their representatives, and which have been and will continue to be the subjects of my increasing solicitude. They are the preservation of the rights of the several States and the integrity of the Union...My experience in public concerns and the observation of a life somewhat advanced confirm the opinions long since imbibed by me, that the destruction of our State governments or the annihilation of their control over the local concerns of the people would lead directly to revolution and anarchy, and finally to despotism and military domination". The speech is printed in black lettering and formatted in two columns with the title centered above, surrounded by a decorative border. Silk laid down on old linen auxiliary support. 11 1/3" H x 9 3/8" W. 2nd item: Lithograph titled "Andrew Jackson. 7th President of the United States" lithographed by Peter S. Duval (Pennsylvania/France, b. 1800) after a portrait etched on stone by Albert Newsam (Ohio/Delaware, 1809-1864). From "Portraits of the Presidents" published by C.S. Williams, Philadelphia, 1846. Depicts a forward facing oval portrait of a Andrew Jackson, surrounded by a decorative border. 14 1/8" H x 11 3/4" W. Both items early 19th century. (Additional high-resolution photos are available at www.caseantiques.com.)
