Description
**Originally Listed At $300**
Pre-Columbian, Classic Maya, ca. 300 to 900 CE. A simple and elegant necklace made from seven greenstone (jadeite) beads and two creamy white beads on a modern sterling silver strand. The value of greenstone (jade or jadeite) for ancient people lay in its symbolic power: perhaps its color was associated with water and vegetation. The Maya also placed jade beads in the mouths of the dead. Many scholars have argued that the demand for jadeite contributed to the rise of long distance trading networks and to the rise of urban centers in ancient Mesoamerica. Length of strand: 32" L (81.3 cm); size of largest bead: 1.35" W (3.4 cm)
Provenance: private Denver, Colorado, USA collection
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.
