Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A fascinating hammered and stamped gold applique comprised of 77% gold (equivalent to 18K+) , flat, slightly flaring at the edges, with a stamped figure of the upper body of a woman at its center. She holds her hands across her stomach, with her breasts clearly visible above them. She wears a diadem and her hair is seen in two plaits that hang to her shoulders. Below her is an applied, shield-like gold boss. Above her head, other stamped figures are visible, but much fainter - what looks like the full body of a woman and possibly a horse are on the top of the applique. A fascinating decorative item. Size: 1.05" W x 2.05" H (2.7 cm x 5.2 cm); gold quality: 77% or the equivalent of 18K+; total weight: 4.3 grams.
