Description
Roman, early Imperial Period, ca. 1st century CE. An adorable, free-blown glass flask of a miniature size with a slightly concave base and a smooth pontil scar, a globular body with a tapered cylindrical neck, and a flared, in-folded rim. The composition is formed from opaque, cobalt-hued glass with faint threads of opaque white glass mixed in prior to the vessel's formation. Typical mosaic glass is comprised of canes of different-colored glass which form the shape of a vessel in a mold, though pseudo-mosaic glass like this example exhibits only the appearance of individual canes. A rare and charming example of fine Roman artistry with iridescence throughout! Size: 1.1" W x 1.625" H (2.8 cm x 4.1 cm).
For a stylistically-similar example of a pseudo-mosaic glass flask, please see "Solid Liquid: Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Islamic Glass." Fortuna Fine Arts, Ltd., New York, 1999, p. 54, fig. 77.
Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection; ex-Richard Wagner collection, Cape Cod, Massachusetts, USA, acquired in the 1960s
