Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Guerrero region, Mezcala, ca. 500 to 200 BCE. A skillfully-executed seated monkey figurine, hand-carved from a beautiful flecked greenstone with beige and black inclusions. The endearing simian creature presents a long, arching tail behind a petite body, with a minimalist visage composed of drilled eyes, an ovoid mouth, and a rounded forehead. The figure's arms are curved up to its recessed legs, and a biconically-drilled hole allows the pendant to be suspended. The piece demonstrates the Mezcala artisan's command of string-cutting techniques resulting in marvelously abstract forms that appeal to contemporary sensibilities! Custom wooden display stand included. Size: 2.5" W x 3" H (6.4 cm x 7.6 cm); 3.625" H (9.2 cm) on included custom stand.

Figure repaired from multiple pieces with small chips and light adhesive residue along break lines. Surface wear and abrasions commensurate with age, small chips to suspension hole, tail, body, and head, and some light roughness. Light earthen deposits throughout. Old inventory information written in black ink between tail and head.
