Description
Major General Horatio Gordon Robley (British, 1840-1930) watercolor on cardstock painting titled "Another Bull," depicting soldiers at target practice while other soldiers watch, including an officer seated under a parasol. Signed "H. Robley" and dated "91" with additional writing below, " __ Ascot". Titled lower center with additional inscription "Captn. Menzies Wimbledon 1874" lower left. 7" x 10" cardstock; 11" x 14 1/4" matted. English, late 19th century. Note: Horatio Gordon Robley was a British soldier, watercolorist and noted collector of Maori heads. He frequently sketched and painted scenes from his military duties, which carried him to exotic locales around the world. He had an expertise in riflery and in 1871 transferred to the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. He also wrote the history of the regiment. This work may be an illustration for that undertaking.
