Description
Native American Cree or Crow presentation tomahawk, iron blade with incised and colored decoration, handle with an all over carved relief floral and leaf design in colors of red, yellow, blue and green. Lower edge of handle inscribed "AEG Montgomery" for Sgt. Albert Ernest Garland Montgomery. 24" L with blade x 9 1/2" W, blade. Late 19th century. Provenance: Oral history states that this tomahawk was given to Sgt. Albert Ernest Garland Montgomery, Royal Canadian Mounted Police, 1890. Sgt. Montgomery participated in the 1885 Frog Lake Massacre, which was part of the Cree uprising during the North-West Rebellion in Western Canada. Sgt. Montgomery later died from injuries when thrown from his horse while on parade in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. (Additional high-resolution photos are available at www.caseantiques.com.)
