Description
Group of three (3) William Nowland Van Powell (Tennessee, 1904-1977) Roman themed watercolor paintings on paper including one (1) depicting the Vatican courtyard, signed top left, one (1) depicting the Arch of Constantine, signed lower left, and one (1) depicting Trajan's Column, unsigned. Two housed under glass in molded giltwood frames (Sight - 17 7/8" H x 12 3/4" W. Framed - 27 1/2" H x 21 1/8" W) and the Arch of Constantine painting is housed under glass in a whitewashed wood frame with green silk matte (Sight - 18 1/2" H x 12 3/4" W. Framed - 30 3/4" H x 24 5/8" W). Provenance: Paintings were given by the artist to a friend who lived in Memphis and has descended in her family. Biography: Memphis, TN architect and artist, Nowland Van Powell (1904-1977) retired from architecture in the 1970s and began to paint full time. He is known for his paintings of ships and naval battles and also for painting Christmas cards for Vice President Spiro Agnew and family in 1971. Van Powell was the author of The American Navies of the Revolutionary War, a collection of his paintings, with descriptive notes by the artist was published in 1974 by G. P. Putnam's Sons, New York.
Condition
Slight toning and scattered foxing to smaller watercolors with scattered lossed to gilt frames. Larger Arch of Constantine watercolor overall very good condition.
