Luke Oas (American/Kentucky, b. 1940) oil and acrylic on canvas expressionist or surrealist painting titled "Interstate, Summer 1934" depicting a male figure set against a cross section of a car on a stretch of open road; a disembodied arm extends into a white rectangle set below the main image. Signed "Luke Oas" en verso with artist's address, accession numbers, and label for Mid-South Exhibition of Paintings 1971, Brooks Memorial Art Gallery, Overton Park, Memphis, Tennessee. Housed in a white painted wooden frame. Sight - 47 7/8" H x 49 1/2" W. Framed - 49 3/4" H x 51 1/4" W. Third quarter 20th century. Provenance: Deaccessioned from the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art. Note: Luke Oas studied at Murray State University, where an alumi award is named in his honor, and was a professor of art at the University of Kentucky. A solo exhibition of his work was held at the Schaefer Gallery, Gustavus Adolphus College, Saint Peter, MN, in March 1975. Note: the first annual Mid-South Exhibition was held at the Brooks in 1956, a tradition that continued for the next 17 years and included purchase prizes to help bring regional art into the collection. Jurors included artists such as Wil Barnet and Jack Levine as well as museum directors from institutions such as Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and The Walker Art Center.
